Everybody needs good neighbours
Disputes between neighbours are not uncommon.
However, few can have gone to the extent that one resident of Kelvedon Hatch went to in order to pay back a neighbour who had riled him.
It could not have been a spur of the moment act of revenge either, as it involved the individual getting in the builders. And their handiwork still stands on the main Brentwood to Chipping Ongar road, a visible reminder of a feud that probably went a little bit too far.
Brizes, now home to a private school, is an impressive mansion even today. It was once called Bryce and was the home of the Royds family. In 1906, Mr Royds decided to bring charges against a neighbour who had shot a pheasant on his land. That particular neighbour was fined in court and was so incensed that the matter had been taken that far, that he vowed to get his revenge. Knowing he could not trespass on their land for fear of finding himself in court again, he had to come up with another plan, one that he knew would irk his neighbour. He decided he needed to do something that would remind the Roydses of their actions every single day of their lives. The view from Bryce was an unbroken one and so the vindictive neighbour decided he would create a blot on the landscape. He ordered for a row of cottages to be built on his land â in full view of his neighbourâs home.
The cottages still stand and locals now refer to them as the IOU cottages.
There is another stately home in Kelvedon Hatch that is worth a mention. Kelvedon Hall was home to the Wrights. One of the Wrights moved to the United States and became an ancestor of the famous Wright brothers, pioneers of the aeroplane.
